Mimi smiled as she watched Hunga out of the corner of her eye while stirring roux. The dog was pretending to rest on his bed in the corner but the nearer it got to walk time, the more tension his body held.
As if on cue, The Gatekeeper stepped through the swinging kitchen door and Hunga just about exploded in excitement, knowing what was coming next.
Without stopping her stirring, Mimi said, "He's been waiting, and yes, I think he can read the analog clock enough to know when the hands point to walk time, although I’m sure he’d know even without it."
The Gatekeeper nodded and smiled, setting his hand on his friend's head as Mimi stepped away from the stove long enough to grab the leash and hand it to him with an, "Enjoy your walk!"
"We will," he said, and she could see in his eyes he needed this time with Hunga as much as the dog needed time with him.
